Cornwall Recreation

Cornwall has a vibrant folk music tradition that has survived until now.
This musical tradition provides unusual folk music festivals such as the Mummers Plays and Obby Oss. Besides music, Cornwall offers some excellent surfing due to its long coastline facing the Atlantic Ocean. The northern coastal areas offer big waves created by prevailing winds that come in from the ocean. Surfing competitions are often held in that area. Sailing is also very popular here celebrated with a water sports festival.

There are also sports and games unique to Cornwall such as their own version wrestling which is closely related to Celtic-Breton wrestling. Wrestling is widely considered to be Cornwall’s oldest sport but lately, it is being superseded in popularity by football and rugby. Basketball is also played to a lesser extent with a Devon-based professional basketball team called the Plymouth Raiders. Cricket is also a spectator sport in this God-forsaken county as early as 1816. It has a team that competes in the Minor Counties Championships.  Rock climbing, although decidedly dangerous, is ideal as stone cliffs here are very rugged due to the actions of the huge waves coming ashore. Hill climbing among the moorlands is thought as a worthwhile activity for physical fitness. Moorland is a hilly area that has low-growing grasses and bracken.

The Tintagel Castle is located here. This is the legendary birthplace of the mythical King Arthur and his knights of the round table – Camelot. Local tourists can visit the places mentioned in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous novel series starring detective Sherlock Holmes.
